Talk to any taxidermist and they will share horror stories about the mounts they've been asked to create by hunters that did them no favors when handling their animal. Getting a good cape from your deer is pretty easy if you just make sure to keep two or three things in mind. We're going to tell you what those are so you can be your taxidermist's favorite client, not someone he dreads coming through the door.
While many of you may know Charlie and Justin for their trapping business, Hoosier Trapper Supply, or their content about trapping, Hoosier Trapper Outdoors, you may not know that they also have a pretty successful taxidermy business on the south side of Indianapolis, Indiana. We go to our good friends to get their take on common taxidermy issues, problems over the years, things you need to keep in mind when handling a cape, and more taxidermy tidbits.
Of course, if we're talking to Charlie and Justin, we have to touch on trapping as well. Deer season is in full swing, but trapping seasons have started opening as well, with more to come in the next few weeks. If you're a hardcore trapper, or someone that dabbles in it when your deer season wraps up, it'll be here before you know it.
The 2022/23 fur season outlook isn't much better than the last few years have been, so if fur prices are what motivate you, you're probably going to be disappointed. That said, there are some brighter spots in the marketing and some places where you can expect to make a little gas money. More than likel you're someone that has started trapping just for the habitat management benefits it offers, in which case the price of the fur doesn't matter as much.
No matter why you trap, or even if you do, there's some great information in this episode, because Charlie and Justin are some of the best in the business.
