What is a Dual-Sim Trail Camera?

As cellular trail cameras have grown in popularity, trail camera manufacturers have offered more advanced and innovative features to meet the needs of the hunters that use them. From pioneering innovations like AI species filters, to the Hybrid Illumination Technology (HIT) flash system, new advances are always coming to make the life of the hunter easier.

In recent years, we’ve seen some cellular trail cameras marketed as having a “Dual-SIM” configuration. What does Dual-SIM mean, and why is it valuable to a hunter?

Some of what it means depends on who is saying it.

When SPYPOINT says the FLEX series trail cameras are Dual-SIM, it means that two SIM cards are pre-activated and pre-installed in each camera. SPYPOINT activates and installs both SIM cards before sale, so set-up and use are much easier. The camera can access both SIM cards without the hunter having to do anything.

When the camera is turned on, it checks one of the cards for network connectivity. If a usable network signal is found, then it stops right there and it will use that network to send photos and videos to the SPYPOINT app. If the first SIM checked doesn’t return a quality network connection, then it will move on to the second SIM card, and scan that network for a reliable signal.

Of course, regardless of the cellular trail camera maker, the part of the equation we can’t control is the available networks in your area. If you don’t have a good signal where you are trying to use the camera, no trail camera is going to work there. However, the two pre-activated SIM cards in a FLEX series camera will all but ensure that if there is a viable cellular network to be found, the camera will find it.

Now, not all cameras labeled as Dual-SIM work quite that way. Some cameras will require you to choose one of the SIM cards and install it yourself. That’s fine, as long as you never move the camera and don’t lose the other SIM card. However, if you want to move the camera and want to use the other SIM card, you are going to have to call customer service to make the change. With a FLEX camera from SPYPOINT, it will automatically connect to the best network with no effort on your part.

There’s another major benefit to having both SIM cards already installed. Should something happen to the network quality, a FLEX camera will automatically check the other SIM card to see if performance can be improved by switching to the other card. Again, it does this automatically, so you don’t have to do anything except sit back and let the FLEX camera do its thing.

Your other camera can’t do that if its other SIM card is in a box in the garage. This improvement to network reliability means there is less chance of missing out on photos or videos because of network errors.

Choosing a carrier model, like has been done in the past, isn’t that hard if you know your area and hunt the same areas consistently. Sadly, due to reasons beyond our control, cellular networks aren't perfectly reliable. Network strength changes over time, and what worked this year may not work next year. What works on one part of your property might not work in another, and this can make moving cameras difficult.

The Dual-SIM technology in the FLEX series is here to make your life easier.

The benefits don't stop there. Pre-installed and pre-activated SIM cards in FLEX series cameras make the entire selection process more streamlined than other Dual-SIM cellular trail cameras. Plus, Dual-SIM configuration in a FLEX camera benefits battery life because the camera will always select the most reliable network to send photos or videos under the best possible conditions.

Think about how that applies to your phone. Have you tried to make a call or send a text message in an area with terrible signal? You can almost watch your battery drain minute by minute. A camera with only one SIM card installed may be able to work in a particular area, but that doesn’t mean it is working in optimal conditions. Like your phone, it may be able to function, but with harsh effects on battery life. FLEX cameras don't have to operate on just one network, so they won’t try to force things though on a bad connection if an improvement can be made by switching to the other card.

SPYPOINT didn’t invent the idea of a Dual-SIM cellular trail camera, but we deliver the best version of it to the hunters who want to use it.

To quit worrying about carrier models, swapping SIM cards, or calls to customer service, take advantage of the Dual-SIM technology only available from SPYPOINT FLEX series cameras.
